Korzo Theater: Funchi con Batjaw World Music Series
On Friday 5 February, Korzo Theater present Funchi con Batjaw as part of their World Music Series, a band who are set to be heating up the stage with Antillean and Surinam originating music.
Funchi is the name for Antillean maize porridge and batjaw the Surinam variety of stockfish. Together they are a symbol of an attractive, swinging mix of Antillean and Surinam music. The music shows sign of its colonial past.
The steel drum, originally made of old oil barrels betrays the prolonged presence of oil companies in the Dutch Antilles. The development of the music of Surinam is partially influenced by the presence of military bands.
Three musical heavyweights from Curaçao, who have never before shared the stage together, make for a spicy and dazzling concert, aided by Steve Mariat and master drummer Walther Eddy Muringen.
Steve Mariat (Surinam): vocals, guitar, Eric Calmes (Curaçao): bass, Walter Eddy Muringen (Surinam): drums, Randal Corsen (Curaçao): piano, Konkie Halmeyer (Curaçao): steel drum.
When: Friday 5 Feb, 20.30
Tickets: Normal €12,50 / Student €6,- / Profpas €8,-
