Shannon Lyon plays at Theater in de Steeg's Acoustic Valley

(Wed 03 February 2010)

On Sunday 7 February, Theater in de Steeg's Acoustic Valley presents singer/songwriter Shannon Lyon to the stage, along with singer Marijn Wijnands. Each month one Sunday-afternoon is filled with the sound of Dutch and foreign singer/songwriters. The setting is the intimate atmosphere of Theater In de Steeg in The Hague.

Lyon's independent upstart into the music industry, following the split of his nationally acclaimed band Strange Days in 1994, quickly made an impression on the Canadian music scene with the release of his highly acclaimed debut solo recording “Buffalo White”, in 1995. This mostly acoustic effort illustrated the diversity of this songwriter’s abilities by presenting a unique mix of heartfelt ballads, and among these the raucous “Macho Nation”, which would provide an ever-growing fan base with a look at what would soon develop into the “The Shannon Lyon Pop Explosion”.

Over the years, Lyon’s song-writing evolved, often highlighted by the impressive steel guitar, banjo, Hammond organ, and various wind instrument sounds. Live performances became an integrated mix of solo acoustic numbers, highly charged rock songs with the Pop Explosion line-up, and energetic journey’s into songs which explored country influences.

In early 2001, Lyon made his first trip to Holland on the advice of fellow singer/songwriter Rob Lamothe. Acceptance was even more instantaneous than it had been in Canada, and by the end of the year, Lyon had signed to Dutch label Inbetweens Records, which released 'Dharma' in Europe in March, 2002.The following year, he recorded 'Wandered' in Holland, which attracted the attention of V2 Records back in Toronto. Lyon became the first Canadian artist to sign to V2 Records, joining the likes of The White Stripes and Moby.

The very unexpected and strange collaboration established between Shannon Lyon and Marijn Wijnands, who met by chance in Berlin, where the past few years Shannon has lived. Gitarist / songwriter Bart Oostindie, who was Marijn's supervisor during a performance in the Dutch Embassy, put the two artists into contact. Lyon was, at the time, doing the final touches on his new album "This Love. This Love", and a female voice was needed for some vocals.

Because the musical collaboration between the two naturally went well, it seemed an obvious decision to join forces for a tour through the Netherlands. Acoustic Alley will be the first stage that the two perform on together.

"This Love This Love" is presented in Paradiso on May 20, 2010.

The venue is Theater in de Steeg in The Hague. The bar is closed during the performances.

The concert starts at 15:00, the doors open at 14:30.

Ticket price: 12,50 euro
