Endless Song of Silence: Dance Performance

(Mon 15 February 2010)

On 24 and 25 February, the Theater aan het Spui host a dance performance by one of The Netherlands’ leading choreographers, Nanine Linning, entitled ‘Endless Song of Silence’.

Regarded as one of the most successful Dutch choreographers of today, Nanine Linning has been described as “a choreographer who likes to stray from the well-trodden theatrical paths. In her work, dance seamlessly merges with design and music.” In her latest production, Endless Song of Silence, these three elements are skillfully drawn upon to reveal the heart-breaking tale of two lovers destined to part.

Linning’s new program, based on the original, breathtaking version of Endless Song of Silence which she created for Scapino Ballet Rotterdam in 2005, draws on the relationship between two people who balance on the delicate line of separation. Sorrow, anger and hope are but a fraction of the emotions that are stirred to the surface while the two lovers seek comfort, peace and security.

A recent review by the Financial Times said, "The challenge of this dance piece, with the beautiful title Endless Song of Silence is that it is multi-interpretable. For one, it is a symbol of the aftermath of a violent relational conflict, for another it will be discovering the vulnerability of humanity. And for some it is a tribute to the firm conclusion of our uncertain future...Movement gives way to inspiration.”

Endless Song of Silence is arranged to the Third Symphony by the Polish composer H. Górecki.

Since graduating from the Rotterdam Dance Academy in 1998, Linning’s career has seen her awarded several prestigious prizes, eg. Phillip Morris Arts Prize, and received an incentive grant from the Prince Bernhard Fund to break into the professional circuit. Linning spent 5 years as house choreographer of Scapino Ballet, notably the youngest choreographer the company has had to date. Linning is now a freelance choreographer, incorporating opera, music theatre and film into her dance repertoire.

On both 24 and 25 February, the concert begins at 20:30. Tickets cost €17,50 but discounts apply for holders of Uitpas, CJP/OV-Studentenkaart and an Ooievaarspas.
