The Royal Theater (Koningklijke Schouwburg) in The Hague presents the new co-production with Cheek by Jowl: Shakespeare’s Macbeth on Wednesday 10 March (Dutch Opening Night) until Saturday 13 March.

The British theatre company Cheek by Jowl, founded by Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod, has established an international reputation for bringing ‘fresh life to the Shakespeare classics’ by making intense, vivid performances. In 2007 they played the phenomenal Cymbeline in de Koninklijke Schouwburg and in 2008 they performed Troilus and Cressida. After these big successes Cheek by Jowl is back in The Hague by bringing us Macbeth.

Macbeth is the great tragedy of the imagination. A man and a woman, bound together in ambition, are destroyed in a welter of blood as Cheek by Jowl's ensemble conjures Shakespeare's world of witchcraft, ghosts and apparitions in an hallucinatory experience of sound and shadow.

Cheek by Jowl is one of England’s foremost proponents of text based theatre. Donnellan and Ormerod's production pares the story back to its devastating heart, exposing Shakespeare's shocking insight into the cost of power.
