Carnaval de Buenos Aires by Quintento Tango Extremo

(Mon 22 February 2010)

This is the time of the year for Carnival celebrations in several countries, each of them having a distinctive trait. Parades, music, dances and colorful masquerades turn into an out of the ordinary annual event for all of us.

The Regent Theater in The Hague will be hosting on  3 March a unique project of world jazz and movie under the name of “Carnaval de Buenos Aires”. This project will put on stage the artistic cooperation between Quinteto Tango Extremo and some guest musicians from Argentina. Two keyboard players, guitarist Gustavo Mozzi and the percussionist Facundo Guevara will play side by side with Tanya Schaap (violin), Ben van den Dungen (soprano saxophone), Hans van der Maas (accordion), Luc van Gestel (contrabass), and Rob van Kreeveld (piano).

Quinteto Extremo has grown into an original and interesting ensemble of the Netherlands. The musicians, teachers of the Conservatories in Rotterdam and The Hague, have a jazz background and have chosen to perform tango music. According to them “Tango means living, means dancing, means shadow sides in the sun. Tango is the game of hide and seek”. They have played in several locations in the Netherlands as well as in other countries abroad, and have produced four albums.

The guitarist Gustavo Mozzi has won the Latin Grammy Award in 2006 under the category of “Best Tango Album” and “Best Packaging”. He is from Buenos Aires and his music includes all the different music traditions of his city, ranging from Tango to Milonga, Milongon, Chacarera and Candombe. The percussionist Facundo Guevara is considered a star of the Argentinian music scene, and has worked with Merceds Sosa and Pedro Aznar.

All these fine musicians have come together for the spectacular creation of “Carnaval de Buenos Aires”. Tango, jazz and projected images of a Carnival celebration in Buenos Aires from the beginning of the last century will be joined together in a show that promises to be really entertaining.
