British Black Humour: Dr Bill Aitchison presents 2012

(Fri 26 February 2010)

The Koningklijke Schouwburg (The Royal Theater) presents Bill Aitchison and his performance of 2012 from Tuesday 2 March until Friday 5 March.

In the performance 2012, independent researcher, Dr Aitchison, reveals sequences of facts covering the war on terror, dog cloning, Saddam Hussein’s novels, I Ching predictions and the end of the world.

2012 concerns itself with the space where conspiracy theories, propaganda, science, art and politics cross over with one another becoming indistinguishable. Created in London and Beijing, 2012 collides perspectives, theories and visions offering a snapshot of uncertainty, of where desire, and fear, leads the contemporary imagination.

"2012 is not simply about the stupid things other people think, it lands a lot closer to home with the crazier theories intruding in and casting doubt upon more conventional ones. That said, some bits of the show do look a lot like very black comedy," Aitchison says of his show.

"Whilst there are some pretty crazy theories in there, some of which are extremely funny, I also include things I genuinely believe and things I half believe or would like to believe, the sort of things I could imagine believing if I let my imagination take care of the logic," he says.

Bill Aitchison is a theatre and performance artist based in London, working in performance, writing, collage, sound and events, collaborating with theatre, sound and visual artists. Typically elegantly structured, witty, open-ended, physically precise and dynamic in their execution, his performances are often auto-biographical. He plays upon the fault lines of the personal and the public, of art and life. He has presented his performances at theatres, festivals and galleries in the UK, US, China, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Israel and Croatia. Apart from having  spent extensive periods in New York’s downtown theatre scene and the European performance circuit working as a writer, actor, advisor and performer, Aitchison has published critical and creative original texts and is a Doctor with a PhD from the University of London.

With the best British black humour he crossed in his future vision, popular half knowledge, diffuse fears and wild rumours...you had to have been there. Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung.

Political and insanely funny. Theater der Zeit, Berlin.

An irresistable hour-long outdoor romp through the most wildly conceived and delusional of conspiracy theories… so good, I really did buy the T-shirt! British Theatre Guide.
