An exciting, new initiative is underway to bring the “Roze Kerk” or Pink Church to The Hague to support the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender community.
Spirituality, homosexuality and community come together in the new Internationale Roze Kerk (IRK) that will open its doors in the center of the Hague on 8 September 2013. This heart-warming monthly church service will combine English and Dutch - traditional and modern - and be led by American ordained minister, Reverend Barbara Rogoski, OMC. It is a non-denominational Christian service and is open for all LGBT people of faith, as well as straight family and friends.
It will be held on the 2nd Sunday of each month within the Basta Café itself, which is the headquarters of the COC Haaglanden at Scheveningseveer 7. Although a café is a non-traditional venue for a church service, any place where people gather together to pray and sing can be a wonderful church experience. There is also a good sound system and a place for coffee afterwards.
With the success of the Evangelische Roze Kerk (ERV) monthly Christian service in Amsterdam, Rev. Barbara had the idea to bring this model to The Hague. The service would follow the same format with traditional Christian prayers and music. But to attract young LGBT people, same sex couples and parents with young children, there will be a modern element to inspire the congregation with pop Christian music, inspirational videos and live performances.
Harry Derksen, Chairman of the COC Haaglanden said, “There is a need for spiritual connection in the LGBT community in The Hague. We believe that this Roze Kerk program will offer additional support to our members with special emphasis on the need of belonging for the youth and the need for loving attention for the elderly.”
Over the next few months, Rev. Barbara will build a team of energetic volunteers to coordinate the service, the music, the administration, and also other support functions. The intention is to have a crèche for small children and a bi-lingual bookstore with the latest Christian music CDs, DVDs and books to support the modern atmosphere. Workshops and lectures will be planned after the service to allow people to have access to current new thought inspirational leaders in Dutch and English.
There is an Open Information Day on 9 June at the Basta Café from 14:00 - 17:30. The opening ceremony will be held at the Basta Café on 8 September from 15:00 - 16:30 with coffee reception after, and every second Sunday of the month. For more information, contact Rev. Barbara via email at email@example.com or visit www.internationallgbtchurch.org.
