Match Report: Wilhelmus just miss out in table topper

After the long winter break, Wilhelmus football club were back in action last saturday. The first team were up against a strong Verburch in one of the many crucial matches they have between now and the end of May.

Verburch threw everything they had at the expat top team, dominating the first 30 minutes with a quick passing game. The pressure eventually told as Verburch went 1-0 up after 20 minutes. Wilhelmus were playing reasonably well and Martin Gillen was unlucky not to equalise after beating the keeper, only to find a defender in the way of his goal-bound shot. Danny Craven also went close, but 0-1 at the tea interval wasn't too bad and the game was most certainly on. Wilhelmus started with renewed vigour in the second half and reaped their reward in the 52nd minute with a Jon Mills headed goal. The rest of the half was one way traffic as Wilhelmus took control. Gillen went close when put through by an inch perfect pass, but the Verburch keeper made a fine save to deny him. Don't know what the keeper had for breakfast, but he was inspired for the rest of the game thwarting Wilhelmus on several occasions. Then, in the 87th minute, Verburch hit Wilhemus on the counter-attack and bagged the winner after a goal-mouth melee. A classic sucker-punch, but 'that's football'! Try as they could, Wilhelmus couldn't quite crack the Verburch defence despite throwing everything but the kitchen sink at them for the last few minutes. A 2-1 defeat, but promotion is still very much on the cards as Wilhelmus and 4 other teams battle it out for the 3 available spots. It's going to be close and exciting!
