On Monday 15 January, the Leiden Blues & Jazz Week will start in the Leiden city center for the 38th time. Until Sunday 21 January there will be more than 70 performances, mostly in the ‘Jazz Quarter’ around Nieuwe Rijn, Nieuwstraat, Hooglandsekerk and Kaasmarkt. During the pub crawl on Wednesday 17 January, concerts take place in cafés and restaurants throughout the city center. New is the opening concert on Monday 15 January in the Hooglandsekerk.
Opening concert Hooglandsekerk:
During the opening concert in the Hooglandsekerk there will be a performance by Martijn van Iterson, the famous guitarist from Leiden soil. He will start the “Jazz Week” with his trio. After this, the Dutch-Dutch jazz singer Ntjam Rosie sings in a very intimate setting. The performance of Ntjam Rosie is provided by Jazz in the Chamber. After the opening concert, there will be performances that night in Meneer Jansen, De Twee Spieghels and De Uyl.
The program in the Jazzwijk has all different varieties of performances: from crooners and big bands to garage jazz and solid blues. Something for everyone and in the most diverse places: after five years a reunion of Monsieur Dubois takes place in de Twee Spieghels. The danceable hard jazz band played from 1999-2012 on the most diverse stages, from underground venues to North Sea Jazz. De Uyl and Jantje van Leiden have blues performances almost every day and have been attracting the best artists from the region for years. Mr. Jansen has no less than six performances this week and has invited a number of international jazz musicians. Grand Café De Burcht is back in the “Jazz Week” and on Saturday night the big band Licks and Brains plays with Frank Montis.
Of course, the pub crawl cannot be missed. This takes place on the Wednesday 17 January. More than 35 catering locations will have live blues or jazz music that night. Also this year there are a number of new catering establishments including Grand Café De Burcht, Brasserie Bos, Belgian Beer Café Olivier and Bar Lokaal. In addition to the new stages, there are also the familiar places like ‘t Praethuys, De Marenpoort and Lemmy’s. In the Pieterswijk and along the Rapenburg the “Jazz Week” is also present from the Keyzer to Schommelen and the WW and everything on that route. Of course, there is music in many places along the Nieuwe Rijn and around the Hooglandse Kerk.
Enjoy an extensive lunch, drinks or dinner and at the same time listen to a wonderful concert? This year you can go to various locations for this: Catootje on the Markt, Brasserie Bos and Wielinga offer jazz dinner arrangements this week. Wielinga and Einstein will give a jazz lunch on Sunday afternoon, January 21st, and drinks can then go to Jeanpagne during jazz bites.
