Public brainstorming sessions: The Hague: Capital of Culture in 2018

The Hague needs your ideas! As many of you know, The Hague is competing with other Dutch cities to become one of the two European Capitals of Culture in 2018. To discuss and develop new concepts for events that could take place in that year, a brainstorming session in the city library will be organized on Saturday, 26 May, from 15:00 to 17:00. Everyone that wants to make a contribution is welcome to join!

In 2013, a jury consisting of Dutch and international experts will decide which Dutch city may carry the title based on their evaluation on a bid book, which every city has to present. This bid book describes why the city is a suitable candidate.

Each idea presented on that day has a fair chance of getting implemented in 2018.

If you want to make sure your ideas are heard, don’t miss this opportunity on Saturday!

More information can be found here.

When: 26 May, 15:00 – 17:00
Where: City Library, third floor

24th edition of Dag in de Branding

On Saturday 26 May, the 24th edition of Dag in de Branding will be held on various stages in the city centre of The Hague.

The one-day festival for contemporary music is now highlighting 'home-grown music'. Korzo Theater and Theater aan het Spui will stage two new music theatre productions by Dutch composers: 'Achterna gedragen' by Piet-Jan van Rossum and 'Vissen hoesten niet' (Fish don’t cough) by Jan van de Putte. The Residentie Orchestra will round off the day with works by Dutch composers Tristan Keuris (Catena, 1988) and Diderik Wagenaar (Solenne, 1992).

Together with artist and theatre maker Petra van der Schoot, Piet-Jan van Rossum’s latest joint project, Achterna gedragen: een valdemonstratie op weerberichten van Toon Tellegen, is rich in symbolism. It is about letting go of the familiar and is set against a backdrop of electronic soundscapes, surreal decors and hallucinatory video images.

Vissen hoesten niet ‘Fish don’t cough’ (2012) is a music theatre performance for six percussionists and a dancer, in which Van de Putte drew inspiration from city life. In the modern metropolis, a musical process unfolds in the abstract: the individual relates to the masses by following social codes, in the same way that the instrumentalist relates to the ensemble according to musical rules. Vissen hoesten niet expresses the rhythm of urban life. Furthermore, dance and percussion unexpectedly interact in what seemingly isn’t real and yet apparently is: a rhythmic beauty.
