ADO Den Haag 1- 2 FC Twente

(Sun 30 November 2008)

The opening exchanges saw FC Twente quickly in to their rhythm as ADO old boy Eljero Elia raced at his former team mates causing several early headaches with his speed. On 5 minutes Zwinkels the ADO keeper was called upon to make a fine save diving to his right to push away a fierce 20m shot. Just 4 minutes later Twente were awarded a free kick 30m out. Theo Janssen rifled the shot towards goal and Zwinkels had it covered until the ball cruelly deflected off the knee of his own defender Rankovic. The 200 visiting supporters who had been singing loudly since the start went crazy. By the time 20 minutes was played the loyal hardcore of ADO supporters in the Midden Noord were starting to show their frustration at their teams inability to even string two passes together. ADO looked short on ideas and skill and were being dominated by Twente.  The goal kick started ADO's players into a mini fight back, taking control of the midfield battle, working hard for each other, but time after time, the final decisive killer ball into the box was missing and given away cheaply. Only several great saves from Zwinkels in the final 5 minutes of the half prevented Twente taking what could have been a 0 -  4 lead. Also a well hit volley crashed against the bar with the keeper beaten. The ADO players  looked shell shocked as they left the pitch at half time.

A completely different ADO started the second half. The half time team talk must have been brutal as they came out with a lot more strength and aggression wanting to take the fight to Twente. For 10 Minutes Den Haag were on top with some nice slick passing, only to end with that usual problem of the final ball. They certainly need a new forward who is big enough and strong enough to hold up play until  more support can arrive, as so many opportunities were going astray. However, Twente were still creating chances, N Kufo forcing a magnificent save yet again from the inspired Zwinkels. Seconds later the Twente defender Stam easily waltzed his way through ADO's defence only to miss what should have been a simple second goal. On 76 minutes ADO were awarded a free kick wide on the right. A well placed cross was met by the head of Leroy Resoadihardjo, a great goal for ADO that was greeted with a lot of relief by the home support. As usual in football, the team who has just scored switches off and becomes vulnerable for a short time, ADO relaxed and were caught out by a defence splitting pass in the 80th minute which saw Marko Arnautovic in plenty of space in a one on one with Zwinkels, the result, a goal to put Twente back in front. From that moment, ADO looked like a team beaten. The final whistle went and the visitors celebrated with their fans as ADO took applause from their own magnificent fans, who even in defeat acknowledged their heroes.

At the press conference, Steve McLaren the manager of FC Twente admitted he though  ADO were looking good for a point because this players were able to finish ADO off when they were in total control. So he said he was relieved to get this win.

ADO manager, Andre Wetzel was focused on the games ahead and said he was confident that the players he has are good enough to stay up.

Man of the Match: Robert Zwinkels. If it was not for his outstanding performance, ADO would have been thrashed by Twente. He was in outstanding form and his team mates should be thankful to him.

Attendance 10, 000

Next home fixture for ADO is on December 13th against Roda JC.
