Match Report: Wilhelmus 1st team reach play-offs!
The end of the regular season saw 3 Wilhelmus teams in action. The 5ths finished off a highly satisfactory year with a narrow defeat and the Ladies also just lost out to the team in second place in their league with a creditable 2-0 loss. The big news of the day, however, was that the men's 1st team have reached the end of season play-offs.
Haagse Hout 1 vs Wilhelmus 1 : 1-1
HH finished 2nd in this highly competitive league and had already secured their place in the play-offs. Wilhelmus were unsure of their situation, but both teams were desperate to win as Wilhelmus won the first game between the two earlier in the season and knew they had a chance for a play-off place with a good result. The first half was a tight affair with neither team creating many chances on goal. The second half was completely different as Wilhelmus gradually dominated play and found a way through the strong HH defence. Chances came and went with Danny Craven, Michael Sanderson and Scott McRae going close, but the ball just wouldn't cross the white line. HH had chances of their own, but Paul 'Towny' Townsend made a couple of excellent saves to deny them.
Wilhelmus kept pushing forward to no avail, then disaster as the HH centre forward rose above everyone else at a corner to score with a fine header. Wilhelmus didn't give up, of course, and continued to probe and test the HH defence. Danny Craven broke through and was adjudged to have been fouled by a combination of the HH defender and keeper to claim a penalty. Danny stepped up to crack the ball into the top corner for a well-deserved birthday goal. 1-1 and the final few minutes were even more frantic as Wilhelmus tried to force a winner. In the last seconds Sanderson slipped his marker and found himself one-on-one with the keeper. His shot went agonisingly close, just sliding over the bar. The referre blew the whistle for the last time and a pulsating second half came to a close. Wilhelmus were very unlucky not to take all 3 points, but any disappointment was temepered by the news that they'd done enough to make the play-offs.
This Saturday, Wilhelmus play Ariston, the TU Delft student team for a place in the next round. It's going to be another great game with everything to play for in a cup final atmosphere. Kick off is at 14.30 at the TU Delft sports ground.
