700,000 at heroes’ welcome for Oranje team

(Wed 14 July 2010)

The Oranje team was received at the prime minister’s Catshuis residence on Tuesday morning, and proceeded later on to the Palace Noordeinde for a reception with the Queen.

Two helicopters whisked the team after the meetings from The Hague to Amsterdam for a boat parade around the canals. The activity culminated in a gathering at the Museumplein where a huge stage was set up.

An estimated 700,000 people, the majority of whom wore the Dutch national color, swathed Amsterdam in orange on Tuesday to give the Dutch football team a heroes’ welcome. They congregated along the canals, tooted horns and waved flags as the boat carrying the team passed by. Hundreds of thousands more were waiting at the Museumplein.

Short speeches and acknowledgments were made and DJ Armin van Buren spun music for the crowd thereafter.
