The new herring season began on Tuesday with the sale of the ‘first’ barrel of Hollandse Nieuwe for charity. This year, the barrel went to a group of young entrepreneurs from Veenendaal, who call themselves ‘Gentlemen of the Fish’, the Telegraaf said. They paid €65,000 for the fish, well below the €90,000 which the Plus supermarket group offered last year.
The record paid for a barrel was €95,000, forked out by a staffing agency in 2012. On Saturday, the official launch – Vlaggetjesdag – takes place in Scheveningen.
