On Saturday, in the newly opened Sports Campus Zuiderpark, Alderman Rabin Baldewsingh presented  The Hague’s bidbook  to become  European Capital of Sport 2021.

The title ” European Capital of Sport ” has been awarded since 2001 to cities with more than 500,000 inhabitants who aim to give sports  a bigger profile in their city. It is comparable to the title ‘European Capital of Culture’, for which The Hague  unsuccessfully bidded  for in 2018.

For the title of ” European Capital of Sport 2021  ”  The Hague  is in competition with Lisbon and Riga.

The gemeente  has given several reasons for applying.  They  think  that the candidacy will have a  “flywheel effect” on the goal of getting all  Hagenaars  to participate in  sport or exercise by 2030.  Furthermore, the gemeente  says that it is a great way to profile The Hague internationally and offers the opportunity to exchange knowledge with other major cities in Europe.
