De Bonte Koe, or “Colourful Cow” in English, is a family business, started in 1992 by the Klein family. Their chocolate workshop was built in a 300-year-old gin distillery on Schiedam’s Lange Haven which continues to inspire the characterful fillings of their unique bonbons and freshly made bouchées.
Luckily for Hague dwellers, these delicious confections are now available right on our doorstep in their iconic new shop on Korte Poten, just a few steps from de Plein.
Even before you step into the beautifully restored former butcher’s shop your attention is drawn by the unusual window display of a giant chocolate sculpture of a bull’s head and the divine smell of chocolate fondue gently wafting through the door. Once inside, the wow factor of a huge display of strikingly elegant chocolates and original seasonal gifts is complete. Now all you have to do is choose….and since this might take a while, you have reason to linger in this chocolate heaven!
Here are a few of their favourites to whet your appetite:
Or you can make your own selection…
All the chocolates are freshly made each Monday by an enthusiastic team of international confectioners, led by Master chocolatier, Cees Klein. Cees has been working with chocolate for over 40 years and yet his enduring passion for every stage of the process, from responsible sourcing of the cocoa to the painstaking crafting of each original creation shines through.
You can experience this first-hand by taking part in one of De Bonte Koe’s imaginative chocolate workshops and masterclasses. Groups of 6-10 friends or work colleagues have an opportunity to create their very own chocolate selection from preparing the filling to coating and decorating each bonbon individually. This video of a workshop gives an idea of what you can achieve! As well as being great fun, it is a wonderful insight into the care and craftsmanship which goes into every single chocolate at De Bonte Koe.
