In the first half of 2018, social support charity Fonds 1818 have supported over a quarter of a million euros’ worth of community projects covering everything from rejuvenating green space to building playgrounds in The Hague, Delft, Leiden and surrounding areas. The organisation is celebrating its 200th year of operation in 2018.

With ‘Enrich your Neighbourhood Inspiration Cafés’ organised across municipalities, the fund seeks to support and develop neighbourhoods, working alongside residents who want to see change. The first half of 2018 saw 21 cafés in 12 municipalities with around 600 residents in attendance. These meetings are an opportunity for passionate community members to talk about ideas and receive up to €3000 in funding for local projects.

Project Leader Marjet van Os said, “During our Enrich your Neighbourhood Inspiration Cafés, we speak to many people who feel disconnected but want to do something good for their neighbourhood. That is really heart-warming. Their ideas are often very surprising and inspiring. We are happy to help those people on their way by giving advice, guidance, money and inspiration.” [translated]

So far, the fund has supported youth holiday projects, elderly assistance, education and bullying support programs, youth work opportunities, choirs, sustainability efforts, school playground development and arts programs. They are looking for more applications for loans, investment or funding for community and local projects to help develop a better society through advice, investment and project support.
