The DELA Beach Open happening in the Netherlands is the first FIVB World Tour event of 2018. The world’s best beach volleyball players will be competing for $ 300,000 in prize money.

Sportcampus Zuiderpark

DELA Beach Open is a special tournament because the competition will be held inside the brand new Sportcampus Zuiderpark in The Hague. The Sportcampus opened last summer. The DELA Beach Open in June 2017 was the first international sports event that took place in the Sportcampus. The central sports hall will be converted into a beach volleyball area.

The World’s Best Playing in The Hague

An elite contingent of international players will be coming to The Hague in early January. Six Brazilian teams have signed up for the women’s tournament. Among them are last year’s winners Maria Antonelli and Carolina Solberg.

In the men’s event, Pedro Solberg is the player to watch. Solberg won the bronze medal at the World Championships in 2015 in The Hague and multiple medals on the FIVB World Tour. Other players to keep an eye on are Sean Rosenthal and Casey Patterson from the United States and Aleksandrs ‘the Lion King’ Samoilovs and his partner Janis Smedins.

Dutch Teams Ready for Action

All Dutch top beach volleyball players will take part in the DELA Beach Open. Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen, winners of the Olympic bronze medal in Rio, will be attending just like Christiaan Varenhorst, who will play with Jasper Bouter. Ruben Penninga / Tom van Steenis, Wessel Blom / Yorick de Groot and Sven Vismans / Jannes van der Ham will also be competing.

In the women’s event, Sanne Keizer and Madelein Meppelink of Beach Volleyball Team Netherlands will play together for the first time. Annemieke Driessen / Ilke Meertens and Marleen van Iersel / Joy Stubbe have also signed up for the four-star tournament.

Michel Everaert, director of the events at Nevobo is looking forward to the DELA Beach Open: “It is very important that our top players can show themselves in front of their fans for the development of beach volleyball in the Netherlands. Because of the possibilities that Sportcampus Zuiderpark has to offer, we are able to organize a fantastic beach volleyball event for both participants and fans. We are happy and grateful for the support shown by The Hague and DELA.”
