Exhibition: Imaginary Nature in Paper

Paper Art & Design shows three Dutch artists, who depict nature on paper in their own way.

As a sculptor Alice Bakker (nl) works with various materials such as steel, copper, silver and paper. She is inspired by movements in flowing water or the capricious network of mosses or tree branches and the fibre of the paper. Her work is the result of research in paper into structures and forms that arise through growth and movement. By cutting away forms, spatial structures are created through which the light falls and the environment becomes part of her work.

In the surrounding nature we experience both rapid change and transience. Visual artist Loes Schepens (nl) makes tactile (wall) sculptures of purely natural materials that can refer to our sensory experiences on a walk by the sea or in the woods. Her abstract works, apparently simple, can be traced back to the world of animals and plants and their structures. Her touchable objects make us aware of our – sometimes outlandish – relationship with nature and invite us to slow down and remain still.

As a visual artist and paper maker, the work of Mark de Weijer (nl) is the result of an interaction between material and images of the Dutch landscape. During his work travels through China and Japan he was touched by the intense experience of nature in the traditional painted landscapes. Based on this relationship and the possibility of combining paper as a natural material with a representation of that nature, de Weijer is looking for a new image of the ancient polder landscape.
