Exhibition: The Art Nouveau Book Binding @ Museum Meermanno
Splendid books, artistry and craftsmanship

Introduce yourself to the splendid books, artistry, and craftsmanship of Gerrit Willem Dijsselhof, Carel Adolph Lion Cachet and Theo Nieuwenhuis. A must for all lovers of beautiful books and Art Nouveau.

This spring, Museum Meermanno is celebrating the beauty of Art Nouveau books. This exhibition, titled ‘The Exquisite Binding: Art Nouveau Books of Dijsselhof, Lion Cachet and Nieuwenhuis’, focuses on the work of these three Dutch artistic pioneers. Between c.1890 and 1910 they produced not only magnificent books, certificates and albums, but also furniture in the Art Nouveau style.

Unique masterpieces

Among the works on display is a unique hand-coloured example of Kunst en samenleving by Dijsselhof and a portfolio cabinet by Nieuwenhuis. The cabinet was designed to hold the deluxe edition of the Rembrandt portfolio by Lion Cachet. He made it in 1898, on the occasion of the investiture of Princess Wilhelmina as Queen. In addition, there are several masterpieces from Leiden University Library, the Royal Collections, the Koninklijke Bibliotheek and the museum’s own collection.

Experience Art Nouveau craftsmanship for yourself in hands-on activities in the exhibition and workshops in the museum’s printing atelier. The museum is also organising lectures and tours, information can be found on the website.

This is an exhibition of the House of the Book, a collaboration of the House of the Book (Museum Meermanno and the KB. National Library of the Netherlands) with the University of Leiden.
