In the years that followed, Valjean worked his way up to become factory owner and village mayor. When factory worker Fantine, just before her death, hands over the care for her young daughter Cosette to Valjean, he seems to finally be able to rise above herself and his past.
Valjean and Cosette move to Paris and live a happy but withdrawn life there, until in 1832 a big student riot breaks out and totally turns their lives upside down…
