The Metropolis Festival is a unique event. No free festival manifests itself so specifically with unknown, but always promising talent. Since 1988 Metropolis has been introducing a large audience to striking, innovative and surprising music of high quality. The one-day festival offers a stage to talented bands and acts that are about to break through. It offers a quest through the exciting line-up of international artists with a live reputation. You should not just listen to good music, you should experience good music live.
On average, on the first Sunday of July, around 35,000 visitors each year find Zuiderpark for a genuine festival experience on the south bank of the Nieuwe Maas.
Visionary programming makes Metropolis what it is. Many acts that have been there are now established names: The Black Keys, Triggerfinger, The xx, Interpol, The Strokes, The Killers, The Asteroids Galaxy Tour, The Vaccines, Kurt Vile, twenty one pilots, Vince Staples to name a few to mention.
There was also local talent, such as Naaz, Ronnie Flex, De Likt, The Kik, Rats On Rafts, Sevdaliza, Sabrina Starke, Elle Bandita, Winne and Gers Pardoel.
This event is the perfect mix of Rotterdam and international. Metropolis is not only a leading event within the city’s festival offerings, it has a national reputation as the ‘must-be’ location for emerging music talent. For the many fans of original pop music, with an irresistible urge for the unknown, Metropolis is certainly the number 1 festival in the Netherlands.
As a pop platform, Metropolis sees it not only as a task to show talented acts, but also to scout these acts from the ‘humus layer’, to offer a stage and to help them develop structurally. This will increasingly apply to all sorts of other disciplines “around the stage” where the festival has already entered into successful collaborations with various educational institutions in recent years.
