World Music from the North Sea String Quartet @ Synagogue Delft

Karin van Kooten (violin)
Pablo Rodríguez (violin)
Yanna Pelser (viola)
Thomas van Geelen (cello)

The quartet was founded in Rotterdam in 2016 by violinists Karin van Kooten and Pablo Rodríguez, viola player Yanna Pelser and cellist Thomas van Geelen. In addition to their classical background, they share a great interest in folk music from Europe, South America and Africa, as well as jazz. With the help of all kinds of innovative playing techniques, the four musicians know how to translate these worlds into the string quartet, as can be heard on their first two EPs “The Kitchen Sessions” (2017) and “Feldwerk” (2018).

In addition to their own work as a quartet, the NSSQ is also happy to join forces with other artists. In this way, together with singer Lílian Vieira, a wonderful program of Brazilian music in quintet-formation was created, which can be heard this summer in the Concertgebouw. They also regularly play with Roland Satterwhite, a virtuoso singer / viola player who is often inspired by the Delta blues. With him they also recorded their most recent EP: “Songs for Flying” (2019).

The quartet members also place great value on inspiring the next generation. They have already given various workshops for young musicians at home and abroad and have collaborated several times with the Canary Youth Orchestra Barrios Orquestados. In addition, they started the Academy of Improvising Strings together with the world-famous jazz violinist Tim Kliphuis in 2019, an annual workshop weekend for strings in the Netherlands.
