The official opening will take place at Sportcampus Zuiderpark

The Special Olympics Regional Games will take place in The Hague on 23 June. The event for athletes with an intellectual disability is preceded by an official opening at the Sport Campus in the Zuiderpark. After the ‘Parade of Athletes’, raising the flag, igniting the flame of the Special Olympics Regional Games and taking the oath, the athletes from the provinces of South Holland, Noord-Holland and Zeeland will compete.

No fewer than seven sports components are represented: swimming, horse riding, athletics, football, bocce, beach volleyball and MATP (Motor Activity Training Program). These Special Olympics Regional Games are organized by the Special Olympics National Games Foundation The Hague 2020 in collaboration with Special Olympics Netherlands.

Sports enjoyment for everyone

Sandra van Koningsbrugge, director of Special Olympics National Games 2020, is looking forward to the Special Olympics Regional Games: “We think it’s fantastic that so many athletes and sports clubs from South Holland, Noord-Holland and Zeeland have registered for the Regional Games in The Hague . It is extremely important that everyone in our society can discover the joy of sports and we are proud to be able to organize such a great event in collaboration with Special Olympics Netherlands. Moreover, it is a wonderful prelude to the Special Olympics National Games 2020, of which The Hague is the hosting city. ”

Zuiderpark sports campus: The beating heart of the Regional Games

Most competitions are held in and around the Sport Campus in the Zuiderpark. The sports components bocce, beach volleyball and MATP take place at the Sport Campus. For athletics, they move to AV Sparta and for football to football club WIK, within walking distance of the Sport Campus. The horse-riding section is held at the Berestein stables and swimmers enter the Hofbad. All participating athletes, with the exception of swimmers, will be present during the official opening. They have their own opening in the Hofbad.

Special Olympics National Games 2020

The Special Olympics National Games is the largest multi-sporting event for people with intellectual disabilities in the Netherlands. Thanks to an excellent bid book, the honor of organizing the Special Olympics National Games 2020 The Hague is earned. During the Special Olympics National Games 2020, abbreviated as SONS 2020, more than 2000 athletes and 750 supervisors visit The Hague. For three days, sportcampus Zuiderpark, Hofbad, Sporthal Ockenburgh and other sports facilities in The Hague organize competitions in no less than eighteen branches of sport.
