The municipality of The Hague is in the race to be Cleanest Shopping Area in the Netherlands, an initiative of Stichting NederlandSchoon. With five shopping areas in the running, The Hague has put its best foot forward in the Cleanest Shopping Area Election. NederlandSchoon will tour the country in the coming months for an extensive investigation, asking shoppers how clean they think their area is. The observation teams also measure the beauty of each entrant. The winner will be announced in October.

Helene van Zutphen, director of NederlandSchoon says: “If your favorite street is clean, shopping will become even nicer and you are encouraged to come back. How nice would it be for these favourite shopping areas to be named cleanest in the country? It is not just the shopping public who benefits from a clean street. The entrepreneurs who are committed to this cleanliness goal work together and therefore have more contact with each other. This has a networking effect and contributes to the sense of togetherness and the perception of cleanliness of entrepreneurs and shoppers.”

Shopping in your municipality

The municipality of The Hague participates in the following areas:

  • Downtown The Hague
  • The Hague Leijweg
  • Frederik Hendriklaan
  • Fahrenheitstraat-Thomsonlaan
  • Theresiastraat

NederlandSchoon wishes all participants every success in the coming months!

This is how Maastricht won

Clean keeps clean. With the winner of the previous award, Winkelcentrum Glacisweg from Maastricht, the retailers, entrepreneurs and the municipality are still working together intensively to keep the shopping area clean. In addition, visitors experience shopping as particularly pleasant because there is very little litter in the shopping center. It inspires visitors to keep it clean.

Clean Shopping Areas Online Scoreboard

To make the importance of cleanliness visible, NederlandSchoon provides guidelines for the participants every year. The interactive data on the website provides guidance from previous years on, so everyone can see at a glance how one area scores compared to other municipalities, which themes are doing well and which themes require extra attention.

About the NederlandSchoon

A Netherlands free of litter is important for people, animals and the environment. That is why NederlandSchoon has been working intensively with companies, citizens, social institutions and government for 25 years to tackle litter and to ensure that a clean environment becomes and remains the norm. Through research, collaborations, sharing knowledge and giving advice, not only more awareness, but also a shared sense of responsibility is created. An example of this approach is Supporter van Schoon, a national initiative that unites and activates people in order to make a bigger fist against litter.
