The Night of the Refugee is a charity night walk event on 29 May, during which the participants travel a 40-kilometre route from Rotterdam to The Hague to raise money for emergency aid projects by Stichting Vuchteling (Refugee Foundation). The donations and sponsorship money generated by the fifth edition of the event will be used for the specific project of helping victims of the humanitarian crisis in Syria.
The night walk begins at Erasmusbrug in Rotterdam at midnight, after which the walkers take a route past the Kralingse Plas, the Groene Hart, Delft and Rijswijk and finally arrive at The Hague’s Humanity House on Friday morning. Participants can walk the 40 kilometres individually or as a team. A number of Dutch musicians, writers, academics, athletes and other local celebrities are also involved in the project, either by taking part in the walk or providing a special night time programme.
This year the event has already attracted a record number of participants, and at the moment registration is no longer possible. There is, however, a waiting list available on the website www.nachtvandevluchteling.nl. Donations can also be made through the site. So far the total donations have reached 270,000 euros, with more sponsors signing up every day to support the good cause.
